Home Remedies For Treating Constipation

Constipation refers to in frequent bowel movements or hard stools. Generally,
passing stool less than three times a week is termed as constipation.
Constipation in some people can result in pain and others may also observe
blood along with stool. Constipation is the result of not having a balanced diet
(especially low fiber content in the diet).

Constipation may be seen in pregnant women and adults over the age of 65. Constipation is seen more so in women
and is a common problem faced in the United States. It is seen that most people prefer to treat it with over the counter laxatives that tend to provide relief almost immediately in mild cases.

Causes of constipation

Constipation is seen to be caused generally by the below mentioned factors:

It is seen that some people ignore the urge to pass stool for several reasons like having to use toilets outside home. Even children are seen to do so for not having to leave their play. Doing so over a period of time can result in constipation.

Treatment of Constipation

The treatment of constipation would depend on the cause, the intensity of the problem and for how long the patient has been experiencing symptoms of constipation. There are several tests that may be conducted to know the cause of constipation so as to determine the line of treatment.

Low fiber content is seen to be the commonly observed cause for constipation. This can be solved with change in dietary habits and introducing vegetables with high fiber content in the diet. It is important to keep your body well hydrated by drinking lots of water and other liquids like juices. Avoid liquids with caffeine content (they would only worsen the already existing condition) and alcohol.

In most cases constipation can be cured with a laxative, physical activity and change in dietary habits. Extensive use of
over the counter laxative is not suggested as the body then tends to become dependent on laxatives. Constipation is not
a major problem but if left untreated for long can have serious consequences. If constipation continues it must not be
taken lightly, as constipation could also be a result of problems in the colon, rectum or intestine like a tumour, cancer or some kind of obstruction in the intestine. If it persists for a long time inspite of best efforts made you must consult a qualified medical practitioner.
