Causes of Toothache

Toothache refers to any kind of pain in or around the tooth. Toothache is also
referred to as "odantalgia" or "odontalgy".

Causes of Toothache

Toothache may be attributed to a number of reasons like :

Toothache depending on the cause may range from mild to very severe. Toothache can sometimes be very intense and can become unbearable. A toothache may increase by any hot or cold food material that you drink or eat depending on the reason of the toothache.

Treatment of Toothache

For finding out the reason or cause behind the toothache dentists resort to an oral examination or maybe even an X-ray. Toothaches may be treated in different ways like for instance by filling the existing cavity, with the help of antibiotics, a root canal treatment or some other technique. If there is no way of saving the tooth the doctor would resort to extraction of the problem tooth to cure the toothache.

Some over-the counter analgesics like Paracetamol and Aspirin are sometimes used by patients to reduce the intensity of the toothache. A dentist should however, be consulted at the earliest as a pain killer can only relieve you of the pain temporarily and does not treat the root cause of the toothache in any way. Pregnant women and those taking medicines for any other disease must consult a medical practitioner before taking medicines like Aspirin. A toothache must be taken care of immediately and a dentist must be consulted immediately so that no further damage is done and it does not turn into a dental emergency.

There are some home remedies that may prove to be useful in treating your toothache :

It is important that you have good oral hygiene to keep toothaches away. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly. You must wash your mouth immediately after eating something sweet or drinking aerated drinks. Have a regular dental check up atleast every six months to detect any tooth related problems early so that you can treat it and not have to suffer a terrible toothache.

A dentist would be able to identify the problem tooth with an oral examination and may take an X-ray for knowing more details about the tooth. When tapped on the problem tooth would have severe pain this is one way the dentist identifies the tooth which has the problem and is causing the toothache.
